Skradin and Krka National Park

Skradin is rather a sleepy little town.  The main attraction is the Krka national park just out of town.  Most of us decide to take the boat to the falls.  But it is close enough to ride and I believe a couple of people did that.  It is a small town so we found the harbour without much difficulty.  It is quite a beautiful little harbour on the Krka river.

As I understand it the water in the Krka river has a very high calcium content - indeed it even looks a bit milky.  Over the centuries the calcium collects on organic matter and builds up to form dams -- resulting in some quite impressive falls and very beautiful scenery.

The park is not a big attraction, but it was very well maintained and quite beautiful.  In addition to the natural scenery they historical displays of life in the area.  Did you know that second hydro-electric generator in the world was here at Krka falls?  It went into service something like a week after the one at Niagara falls.  It has been decommissioned years ago, but the original machinery is still there.  Quite fascinating.

We saw pretty much all of the park by noon, then back on the boat to Skradin.  Great pizza in Skradin.  Then a little bike maintenance and some time to catch up on the blog.  All and all a very relaxing day.  We did run into another bike touring group that afternoon.  I believe it was an italian company but the riders were all american.  The were starting there tour from our hotel in Skradin.  We didn't have a lot of interaction with them except when they came to breakfast after us and found nothing left :-)

Tomorrow it is off to Split -- Croatia's second largest city.
